Project Overview
Jane and Matt came to us with an exciting vision to transform Martlet Barn, a Class Q agricultural building, into a stunning family home. The project presented a unique challenge, requiring extensive remedial works to bring the barn up to modern standards while working within a tight budget.
After appointing a planning consultant to manage the project through the planning process and handle the initial design, they faced challenges with amendments post-planning and delays caused by conditions attached to the approval. Reflecting on the process, Jane and Matt commented, "We wish we’d known to hire an architect from the start. It would have saved time, avoided some of the complications, and ensured the design was better aligned with what we needed from the outset."
Appointed for the full technical design and tender process, we’ve worked closely with Jane and Matt to ensure every detail aligns with their vision while remaining cost-effective. A key part of the process has been collaborating with the contractor to deliver a design that balances practicality, functionality, and aesthetics. The result is a thoughtful proposal that honours the barn’s rural character while creating a comfortable, modern living space.
Our Favourite Memory
One of the most memorable moments was presenting the design to Jane and Matt in 3D. They had struggled to visualise the space from drawings alone, but seeing the proposals come to life in three dimensions was a game-changer. "For the first time, we could really picture how it would look and feel, and we couldn’t be more excited to see it built."
Timescales
We were appointed to the project in early 2024 and have since completed the design and tender stages. Start on site is expected in March 2025, with regular inspections planned to ensure everything stays on track and true to the vision.
