Project Overview

We were thrilled to join Louise and Tim on their journey to transform an existing cow shed into a stunning, near Passivhaus-standard, off-grid eco home. Situated in a remote location within 42 acres of land and accessible only by a farm track, this project presented both unique challenges and exciting opportunities. The couple approached us after securing planning approval, eager to bring their vision to life.

This ambitious green belt conversion blends rustic charm with modern eco-friendly technology. The exterior features natural timber cladding on the lower half, while greencoat cladding on the upper levels provides a sleek, contemporary look. Large expanses of glazing bring in the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, allowing light to flood into the interior.

The home is equipped with state-of-the-art energy-saving systems, including underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery), air source heat pumps, and solar panels. With a timber frame construction, we were able to optimise thermal efficiency and meet stringent SAP and PSI calculations, ensuring a sustainable and low-impact home.

Our Favourite Memory

One of the standout moments in this project has been collaborating closely with the design team and supply chain, fine-tuning every detail to make The Cow Shed as energy-efficient as possible. It’s been a rewarding process seeing all the eco-friendly elements come together so seamlessly.

Timescales

From our initial involvement, it took around 3-4 months to refine the design, work alongside suppliers, and discharge the necessary planning conditions. This teamwork has been key to ensuring that this remarkable off-grid home becomes the ultimate sustainable retreat for Louise and Tim.
